About United Services
Founded to address urgent gaps in behavioral health and human services, United Services has grown into one of Connecticut’s most comprehensive providers. We remain committed to innovation, evidence-based care, and strengthening community health through responsive, accessible services.
What began as a community-based effort to respond to local mental health needs has grown into a comprehensive behavioral health organization serving individuals across Windham County and the surrounding region. Over time, United Services has expanded its scope to meet the changing realities of the communities it serves—responding not only to mental health concerns, but also to substance use, trauma, crisis, family instability, and the broader factors that shape well-being.
Today, United Services is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), providing integrated, coordinated care that brings together clinical services, peer support, crisis response, and community-based programs. This model reflects a core belief that effective care must look beyond symptoms to the full context of a person’s life—connecting services in a way that is accessible, responsive, and sustainable over time.
Throughout its growth, United Services has remained grounded in its community. Its programs and services have been shaped by local need, strengthened through partnerships, and supported by individuals and organizations who recognize the importance of accessible, high-quality behavioral health care.
For those seeking support, United Services offers a place to start—whether in a moment of crisis or as part of a longer journey toward stability and well-being. For funders and community partners, it represents a trusted, established organization with the capacity to deliver meaningful, measurable impact.
At its core, United Services continues to do what it has always set out to do: meet people where they are, and build the support around them that helps them move forward.
How We Began
As de-institutionalization was introduced into Connecticut in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, United Services was among the first in the state to implement a range of community-based support services for mental health clients.
Growth Over Time
United Services joined with another local agency, Quinebaug Valley Youth and Family Services, in July of 1999. Because the two agencies provided complementary services, the merger strengthened both organizations and allowed the new United Services to provide expanded prevention services and community-based programs for youth, adolescents and their families in a cost-effective manner.
Today, United Services is among Connecticut’s most comprehensive private, non-profit providers of mental health and social services. With more than 30 programs, 12 service locations, and a dedicated staff of over 250 professionals, we are proud to continue growing in our mission of “Creating Healthy Communities” by providing top-notch, caring mental health and social services to the children, adults, families and communities of Northeastern Connecticut.
